Heavy-Metal Chelator.
Meso-2,3-Dimercaptosuccinic Acid (DMSA) is a sulfhydryl-containing, water-soluble, non-toxic, orally administered metal chelator which has been used as an antidote to heavy meal toxicity since the 1950s. Recent clinical use and research substantiates this compound's efficacy and safety, and establishes it as the premier oral metal chelation compound when compared to other available chelating substances.

  • Provocation testing using DMSA, followed by a 6- to 24-hour toxic metal urine analysis, is recommended to assess the amount of heavy metals present.
  • Captomer (DMSA) binds tightly to heavy metals, aiding in their excretion by way of the kidney and biliary route.
  • Metals chelated by DMSA include mercury, lead, arsenic, antimony, silver, bismuth, copper, cadmium, tin, nickel, zinc, thallium, and manganese.
  • Captomer should always be used in conjunction with a comprehensive heavy metal detoxification protocol, including therapies to support the body's routes of elimination (colonics, sauna) and maintenance of the body's internal mineral balance.
